Reflux, Gas and Happy Boy

May 2011
That's right, Jamisen is 1 month, 1 week old! Can you believe how fast time has gone by already? It's funny - the nights are long, long, long and the days are mostly short - unless he's crying and then they're long. I'm sure all the other parents out there reading this understand that. =)
I'm 6 days old!
Thank you to everyone that weighed in on Jaminsen's immature digestive system. Something we did is working - but I'm not sure which thing because I threw the kitchen sink at it. I'm off dairy, all gassy veggies, all beans and soy (on the plus side, no dairy means that I'm losing weight like  nobody's business). Jamisen is on anti-gas drops at every feeding. I'm feeding him upright. We've switched Probiotics and lowered the dose.  I'm strictly following Le Leche League 'best practices' for breastfeeding. I'm drinking enough Chamomile Tea to turn me yellow. Jamisen is going to baby chiropractic and baby craniosacral therapy. And something in that whole mix worked because he is no longer a gassy baby.

What is new and different is that now that the gas is gone, the reflux has appeared. It was always there (looking back at my notes) but was masked by the obvious clenching of little legs and fists when he was feeling bloated and unable to figure out how to fix it. Though he is gaining weight like a champ (15 ounces in a little over a week!), he is spitting up a minimum of 3 times per feeding and cries when he does, has the classic wet burps and bad vomit breath and gets  hiccups a lot every day. Our Pediatrician had us elevate his bed, keep him upright for 30 minutes after every feeding (did I mention the long nights?!), stay off the dairy and soy, try soy formula at one feeding per day and burp him many times in a feeding but Lil Man still wasn't getting relief so we are trying Baby Zantac for him this week. I have promised my (Doctor) Father (Jamisen's very proud Grandpa) that I will not leave Jamisen on Baby Zantac indefinitely but for now, I'll do anything to let this little guy get some rest and relief. And, as usual, it takes a village so if you have any suggestions, chime in! I want to hear them.

Look at that head control; this above pictures was when Jamisen was only 7 days old! Isn't it fun to see how much he's grown? And, now, a look back at the month .... he is my little cuddlebug and total love. His daddy is just as crazy about him as I am =)

I love being a Mom so much. I'm already lobbying Chris for a second one - I know Jamisen will appreciate having a little baby brother or sister. PS - Can't get enough of Jamisen? He has his own Twitter account where there are lots of updates and photos daily. Follow @bramblebump here.

DC Update in which the President snubs us

It's been a whirlwind week in Washington, DC for Small Business Week. I won Best Businessperson of the Year for Washington State (click here to see that blog post). If you had told me a year ago that I would have traveled across the country, three weeks postpartum with a newborn, I would have told you that you had clearly taken a train to Crazytown. But life has a funny way of surprising each of us, including me.
Every single President since Kennedy has met with the winners of Small Business Week. So when the opportunity came up to go to DC and meet the President of the United States, well, Crazytown, here I come! I was positively giddy that meeting the President might be ticked off my 'bucket list.' So, my supportive husband and I made elaborate plans to come to Washington DC, with a newborn, to participate in Small Business Week. But really, it was all about Obama for me!
The trip to the White House did happen and Jamisen was pre-cleared through security, even without a social security number but alas, the President did not appear. Despite sending high ranking officials who assured us that we "had no better friend than the President," this President chose to not meet with the "drivers of the Nation's economy." That ended up being par for the course for elected officials as not one single Congresssperson deigned to show up at the Congressional Reception, held at the Senate Building. It was a clear indicator that DC is a lot of lip service when it comes to small business. The top entrepreneurs in the entire country were at their doorstep and they literally could not be bothered to walk the few steps to the reception. It was quite the snub to all the award winners who put their lives and businesses on hold to spend the week in DC.
Despite that disappointment, Chris and I put our normal optimistic happy faces on and made the best of the week, meeting other awesome entrepreneurs and taking in the sights. Washington DC is steeped in history and we were able to take in the Mall with all the monuments twice. We are certain Jamisen will be very thankful for the memories we made on his behalf.
The highlight of the week turned out to be a visit to the Google offices. They are bright, happy, fun and cheerful and man oh man, you should see their kitchen! There was so much yummy, awesome, healthy food in there (swoon). I want to be Google when I grow up or at least have their kitchen. Google was so excited about the Small Business Week winners that they gave us all their unreleased Chrome books. I'll do another separate review of the awesome, generous gift but for now, just know that I heart Google. And I'm using their new +1 service and it's pretty cool.
All the State winners; that's me, in the bright yellow dress, on the left.

And a fuzzy photo of me accepting my award from Administrator Mills of the SBA. I'll have better, non-phone, photos to share when we get home.
I was so lucky that my sweet husband took time off of his work to be the World's Best Baby Carrier and general support. He and Jamisen got to bond, alot, because Chris never put him down. =)

For the final night of SBA Small Business Week, there was a fantastic black tie gala. Lil Man got dressed up for the occasion too, complete with a bow tie. Unfortunately, because of the feeding needs of small children, we didn't get to stay for the dancing but it was fun to get dressed up and bring the cutest accessory in the entire place.

After living in a hotel with a newborn this week, both Chris and I are really looking forward to getting back Washington state and to our comfy baby'fied home. We're both just a little tired (ha ha - make that bone weary zombified tired) but also thrilled about the memories we were able to make as a family. Jamisen might not remember them but we'll always have this blog post for proof.

3 Weeks Old

Life with Jamisen continues to be a learning and growing experience for both of us. Jamisen is quite adorable and is absolutely a little love bug - that is, when he's not gassy, experiencing acid reflux, or has a wet diaper. But, I suppose adults would also be cranky with either of those three things too.

I'm 6 days old!
With Grandpa's stuffed bear from when Grandpa was a tiny tot.

He is not a big fan of sleeping much at night but his naps during the day are epic and long. I think he must have his night and day mixed up. It is causing his Mommy and Daddy to start to feel psycho so we are hoping that this lack of more-than-2-hour-sleep at night is short lived.

Hold him tight, Daddy!
We've started giving him showers with Daddy and he loves them!

Dry and happy.
For Mother's Day (and my birthday!), we went to Seabrook and took Jamisen to the beach for his first time. His sleep schedule got really messed up with the 4 hours in the car seat. He slept for so long that he wasn't interested in sleeping at night (at all!).

I've been reading to Jamisen after his feedings but since he doesn't understand what I'm reading yet, we're reading what I'm reading. This morning, we read Time Magazine together. Friday, we read some great personal development books together. This kid is going to be smart!

He sat still for 20 minutes!
We head to Washington DC this week for our big adventure with Jamisen and President Obama. Wish us luck!

Mother's Day At Seabrook

Mother's Day Weekend

Oh what a difference adding a small child makes - our entire car was packed to the roof and onto the top with our family visit to Seabrook. My parents laughed and laughed now that the tables have been turned.

May 2011 Baby Time

Jamisen is quite happy no matter where he's at though I like to think he's a bit happier near water, just like his Mama.

Mother's Day 2011

You can't tell, but really, there is a tiny child in that stroller. He's good for about a mile in it and then he starts to cry and fuss. I imagine he's saying "Don't hem me in! I want to see everything! Pick me up so I have a better view!"

Mother's Day 2011

And, yes, he's quite happy now that he's been picked up and is in Daddy's arms.

Mother's Day 2011

We went on walks on the beach and I'd like to imagine that Jamisen loved the smell of the salt and the sound of the gulls.

Mother's Day 2011

Grandma and Grandpa even visited for one afternoon and it was fun to spend the day together as a family. I love creating memories at Seabrook (and, we hope you do too!).

Baby Jamisen Update

It will come as no surprise to anyone with children that our entire lives have shifted with Jamisen's arrival. We are both tired and euphoric, all the time, and every day brings exciting new challenge and joy. I've been taking Jamisen to work with me a few afternoons and so far, it's been highly inefficient but when your tummy is the size of a golf ball, ya' gotta wake up to eat a lot. It probably doesn't help the efficiency that my grasp of the English language seems to have diminished greatly along with my sleep.
Working from home has been a bit easier (missed the home set up post? Click here to see it) because all of the bag o' tricks (swing, official changing table, lots of different clothes, all kinds of swaddling clothes, four kinds of pacifiers) is at home. I'm still getting to know Jamisen so I don't always know what to do when he screams so having a multitude of options to try and soothe him has saved me on more than one occasion.
Sometimes, he does scream inconsolably and I don't know what to do. It seems that our little guy might be a bit gassy. I'm going to eliminate dairy from my diet; we have two kinds of gripe water; lil man is on baby probiotics but if anyone has any suggestions on how to relieve his pain, I'd love to hear it. There's not a lot worse in life than hearing your child cry in pain and not be able to fix it.

Jamisen Louis is loved

There is no doubt that this lil man, gas or not, is exceedingly loved by everyone in his life. Grandma and Grandpa are especially delighted with him. In fact, I'm pretty sure they don't notice if me and Chris are in the room when Jamisen is there. We're okay with him being the show stopper though; he's the show stopper in our lives too.
